I was pondering the breath the other day - my breath... your breath...

I was wondering what happened in my heart when I was breathing only a little bit. You know that feeling, the one where you are alive and breathing, but feel tight, constricted, lost? For me that is anxiety. I am well acquainted with that creature.

It visits me at 4.30 some mornings, and muses at my tossing and turning. When I finally give in, I turn on my back into Savasana and quietly surrender to my breath. I consciously deepen my inhale and lengthen my exhale, and every time without fail I feel a stillness arrive at my centre. For a long time I just allowed the physicality of my deepening breath to be the reason for my stillness. Now, I ponder...

Kabir writes...

Are you looking for me? I am in the next seat.
My shoulder is against yours.
you will not find me in the stupas, not in Indian shrine
rooms, nor in synagogues, nor in cathedrals:
not in masses, nor kirtans, not in legs winding
around your own neck, nor in eating nothing but
vegetables.
When you really look for me, you will see me
instantly --
you will find me in the tiniest house of time.
Kabir says: Student, tell me, what is God?
He is the breath inside the breath.

 

Now I know.... I find stillness because I open my gateway to the divine. When I breathe deeply, openly, honestly, I am more connected to my heart, to God, to the Universe, to everything that is, to you. I know in my heart the truth that my teachers have taught me many times- The Divine resides in me, as me, for me, always. When I lose my breath, I lose my sense of connection. But luckily, my breath is always there waiting for me to inhale her sweetly into a full embrace. She is waiting to hold me gently as I dive with gratitude into life.

Take a deep breath, and ponder....
